Awakening (2004)


The journey to my Inner Me began with my first Saturn return, two months after my 29th birthday. My parents and I had just returned from Europe and were settling back to our lives in Sydney. I had my dream job in TV and was preparing to take my career further. I also hoped to soon realise my other big dream of owning my own home and starting my family.

Everything changed suddenly one day in early February. I came home from work to find out my father had been killed in a car accident. Having been relatively young and healthy, he never considered making arrangements for such a possible event. I recall all lights going out of my life and total darkness enveloping me as I placed my plans and aspirations on hold to put his unfinished affairs into order and help my mother adjust to a new life.

Amazing how quickly such event teaches you so much. Even before he was buried, my father’s many so called friends showed their true colours and were asked to move on. As his other daughter-my sister-never showed any interest in our family affairs, even at a time like this, I chose this moment to break off our ties. 

The funeral service felt like from twilight zone, as I stared at the coffin and wondered what I was doing in this family. Everyone suddenly felt like a stranger. When we arrived in Australia, my parents wanted to give us the best education. They enrolled us in a private Catholic school which we didn’t have in our communist home. I finished it believing there was a God, although this religion had nothing to offer me. I felt there was a Creator who I wasn’t able to fathom at the time. I decided to keep an open mind and find out one day. The time of awakening had come with the death of my father.

At the end of that difficult year of 1984, in which I also lost half of my family, a good Czech friend of mine-Milan- asked me to do him a favour. To mail a box of chocolates for him to his girlfriend in Germany, as a surprise gift. I had done crazy things like this before and agreed to help him without any hesitation. Three months later, the police knocked on my door one early morning and informed me that the chocolates contained strychnine, were sent to my Milan’s wife’s elderly aunt to kill her for her money! Unfortunately, some of my friends in Germany got to them first and almost died. His wife was next on Milan’s list. As the news became very public on both sides of the globe, Milan’s criminal past as a cold blooded killer was revealed and horrified all.

The shock of this experience was too much and sent me to therapy, as again I questioned who I was, what kind of world I was living in and why were these things happening to me? A Sagittarius, I was always outgoing and trusting, with lots of friends. It was difficult to understand how I could be betrayed in this manner by a friend. Since I also have a Scorpio aspect in my natal chart, I seethed with anger and revenge. I prayed to God not to let our paths cross while we waited three years for the trial. I was ready to kill Milan with my bare hands. It was during this time of constant looking over my shoulder that I learnt to comfort myself with junk food, mainly chocolates.

Lessons learnt:

  • reality on this planet is not what it is generally perceived  to be

  • people are not necessarily what they seem to be

  • you usually find their real value when times are tough

Mira Mikulic, a Bachelor of Arts graduate in Philosophy with Honours in German, has primarily worked in the corporate world for over 25 years as an Executive Assistant to Managing Directors and also as an Office Manager.
